Sign the petition to the African Development Bank

The African Development Bank has a key role to play in bringing modern, affordable energy to the 640 million people in Africa who currently don't have adequate energy access. Most of these people live in rural, off-grid areas which would be best served by increased investment in distributed, renewable energy.

The African Development Bank has committed to increasing investment in off-grid energy, but is still financing fossil fuels. The most recent IPCC report made it clear that the phase out of fossil fuels needs to speed up to meet the 1.5C Paris Agreement target, whilst significant increased investment in distributed renewable energy access is needed to provide energy access for all by 2030. It is therefore unacceptable that the Africa Development Bank continues to include fossil fuels as part of its energy mix.

We are calling on the African Development Bank to scale up investment in sustainable energy access projects and adopt a roadmap for aligning its operations with less than 1.5C warming by 2020.

I am part of a growing global movement of people demanding urgent action to tackle the climate emergency in a just way. The most recent IPCC report made it clear that the phase out of fossil fuels needs to speed up to meet the 1.5C Paris Agreement target, whilst significant increased investment in distributed renewable energy access is needed to provide energy access for all by 2030. It is therefore unacceptable for the African Development Bank to invest in fossil fuels.

I call on the Bank to do more to ensure that Bank’s investment strategy champions the needs of Africa’s poorest people by:  
-	Adopting a roadmap to align all Africa Development Bank’s lending and operations, including through financial intermediaries, with a high-probability 1.5°C pathway by 2020.
-	Directing at least two thirds of the Bank’s annual energy sector budget to sustainable energy access projects, and significantly increasing finance for off-grid and mini-grid clean energy to benefit the poorest people. And ensuring it creates opportunities for women, youths, children both in urban and rural areas across Africa
-	Ensuring that there is continued commitment to shifting finance out of fossil fuels and into renewable energy for energy access through the Bank’s New Deal on Energy, which sets a high standard for other Multilateral Development Banks to aspire to.

The African Development Bank has a vital role to play in ensuring that the world meets the Paris Agreement target of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, whilst providing clean renewable energy to the over 640 million Africans who do not have no access to energy. Don’t let us, and future generations, down.
