The Big Shift Global coalition is partnering with the Fossil Free EIB campaign to call on the European Investment Bank to make the Big Shift from financing fossil fuels to financing sustainable, renewable energy.

As the bank of the European Union, created to invest the EU public money according to the values of the Union, and at the same time as the biggest multilateral bank in the world, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has a big role to play in the global fight against climate change.

This year’s review of its energy policy is THE opportunity for the bank to show its leadership on the clean energy transition we need to save our climate, and to show it puts the interests of the citizens before that of corporations.

Having portrayed itself as a climate champion in the last years – while still channelling huge support to fossil fuel projects, it is now time to substantiate its claims with concrete commitments.

What do we want the EIB to do?

We are calling on the EIB to lead the energy transition by aligning with the Paris agreement and shifting its funds from fossil fuels to stepping up finance for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, in particular small-scale and people-owned and controlled, decentralized projects. This will help limit global temperature rise to less than 1.5C, whilst contributing to providing modern energy access for all.

Send a message to the EIB

You can support the Fossil Free EIB campaign by signing the petition calling on the EIB to:

  • End all financing and lending to fossil fuels, in Europe and beyond,
  • Radically increases financing for energy efficiency and renewable energy, with a clear priority to boost small-scale and community-led decentralised renewable energy projects.

Every signature will help persuade the EIB to ditch dirty fossil fuels in its new energy policy and shift to investing in sustainable renewable energy.
